Week 93: Starvation Mode

Yeah so Anziano Smith got a little sick starting off this past week and then one day later it hit me. We were both just dead to the point where we could barely eat for a few days. We didn't leave the apartment for a whole 48 hours and all I ate was TUC crackers and sliced bread. A few times I was able to sneak in some risotto or something and it felt like the most amazing thing in existence. This week I for sure developed some empathy for people who don't have a lot of food.

We had an awesome week in church! This was a nice change because none of our friends ever came to church in Como. We had a goal this week to have 5 come, with 4 solid ones and maybe a miracle one in the end to hit our goal. Well, one of the members brought her son and his girlfriend who aren't members, so that bumped us up to 6. It was very nice. After sacrament meeting we had an awesome lesson with our friend from Peru who is going to get baptized soon.

The rest of the week was pretty wild. We had interviews with president and sister Wood on Monday which was good as always. After that we drove the Zone Leaders over to our area and we ate some Bulgarian food with our bishop and his family (very good). After that Anziano Guthier and I went to teach a kid with his mom and get him ready for baptism. We just went through a bunch of commandments and had a great time explaining them simply. It was a really good lesson in the end and quite the unique experience. Really brought me back to my Bergamo days when we had a few younger kids we were teaching.

We got home pretty late after that only to realize that one of the Zone Leaders had left his bag in the mission office. We had to drive back to the office during our dinner time so naturally we got home pretty late.

On Tuesday it just downpoured all day. The Zone Leaders left around 4 and we then realized we had zero plans for the rest of the day. We started just contacting people and right after we started we got a message from our Elders Quorum president that he had our Peruvian friend over at his house. We naturally rushed over to visit them (he's always busy with work) and we had an awesome lesson where I had to try my best to teach the Plan of Salvation in Spanish. It was all just a huge miracle that we were even able to be there.

This is a quote from this last conference that got me thinking about an old thought I had. Elder Holland has his wife pass away not too long ago as he was struggling with his own health. It was interesting hearing him say that the prayers to restore her health were answered despite her passing. Why? Because death is not the end. This is all thanks to the Atonement; because Christ overcame physical death, we have, as Elder Kearon once said, "already been saved". This is why understanding the Plan of Salvation is so important, partly because it teaches us that everything will truly be okay in the end thanks to Christ's sacrifice. We are all guaranteed to be healed. We might not know when exactly that healing will take place, but we can have hope amid all of our troubles. No wound is too great for the Savior of the World to heal.

Allora, Anziano Smith è stato un po' male un po' all'inizio della settimana scorsa e poi il giorno dopo è toccato a me. Eravamo entrambi distrutti al punto di riuscire a malapena a mangiare qualcosa per qualche giorno. Non abbiamo lasciato l'appartamento per 48 ore e tutto quello che ho mangiato sono stati i crackers TUC e il pane a fette. Qualche volta sono riuscito a mangiare appena un po' di risotto o qualcosa del genere e mi è sembrata la cosa più bella che esistesse. Questa settimana ho sicuramente sviluppato una certa empatia per le persone che non hanno molto cibo.

Abbiamo avuto una settimana fantastica in chiesa! È stato un bel cambiamento perché nessuno dei nostri amici è mai venuto in chiesa a Como. Questa settimana avevamo l'obiettivo di farne venire 5, di cui 4 solidi e forse uno miracoloso alla fine per raggiungere il nostro obiettivo. Ebbene, uno dei membri ha portato suo figlio e la sua ragazza, che non sono membri, e questo ci ha fatto salire a 6. È stato molto bello. Dopo la riunione sacramentale abbiamo avuto una lezione fantastica con il nostro amico peruviano che si battezzerà presto.

Il resto della settimana è stato piuttosto movimentato. Lunedì abbiamo avuto le interviste con il presidente e sorella Wood, che sono state ottime come sempre. Poi abbiamo portato i capi zona nella nostra area e abbiamo mangiato del cibo bulgaro con il nostro vescovo e la sua famiglia (molto buono). Poi Anziano Guthier e io siamo andati a insegnare a un bambino con sua madre e a prepararlo per il battesimo. Abbiamo passato in rassegna un po' di comandamenti e ci siamo divertiti a spiegarli in modo semplice. Alla fine è stata davvero una bella lezione e un'esperienza unica. Mi ha fatto tornare ai tempi di Bergamo, quando avevamo alcuni bambini più piccoli a cui insegnavamo.

Siamo tornati a casa piuttosto tardi e ci siamo accorti che uno dei capi zona aveva lasciato la sua borsa nell'ufficio della missione. Siamo dovuti tornare in ufficio durante l'ora di cena, quindi naturalmente siamo tornati a casa piuttosto tardi.

Martedì ha piovuto tutto il giorno. I capi zona sono andati via verso le 4 e ci siamo resi conto che non avevamo programmi per il resto della giornata. Abbiamo iniziato a contattare le persone e subito dopo abbiamo ricevuto un messaggio dal nostro presidente del Quorum degli Anziani che diceva di avere un amico peruviano a casa sua. Naturalmente ci siamo precipitati a fargli visita (lui è sempre occupato con il lavoro) e abbiamo avuto una lezione fantastica in cui ho dovuto fare del mio meglio per insegnare il Piano di salvezza in spagnolo. È stato un grande miracolo che siamo riusciti a essere lì.

Questa è una citazione dall'ultima conferenza che mi ha fatto ripensare a qualcosa che avevo avuto in precedenza. L'Anziano Holland ha visto morire sua moglie non molto tempo fa, mentre stava lottando per la sua salute. È stato interessante sentirlo dire che le preghiere per ripristinare la salute della moglie sono state esaudite nonostante la sua morte. Perché? Perché la morte non è la fine. Tutto questo grazie all'Espiazione; poiché Cristo ha superato la morte fisica, noi siamo, come disse una volta l'Anziano Kearon, "già stati salvati". Ecco perché la comprensione del Piano di Salvezza è così importante, anche perché ci insegna che alla fine tutto andrà veramente bene grazie al sacrificio di Cristo. A tutti noi è promesso di essere sanati. Forse non sappiamo quando ciò avverrà esattamente, ma possiamo avere speranza in mezzo a tutti i nostri problemi. Nessuna ferita è troppo grande perché il Salvatore del mondo non possa guarirla.
