Week 88: Disarming A Bomb

The other morning right at 6:30 our CO detector wouldn't shut up so we opened it up, cut the wires, and smashed it with a hammer. It still wouldn't stop but then we found the off switch and solved the problem. (Before anyone freaks out it was the old one that was two years past its expiration date, we have a new one that works so we don't die).

We put up a lot of fliers for our language courses which was pretty chill except for all the thugs that started prank calling us. We went to a baptism in Lugano which was pretty hype. We also went whiteboard finding and just walked around Como with a big old whiteboard. I met a guy from New Hampshire which was cool. Other than that it was a pretty normal week, just with some door knocking and some interesting lessons.

I read Alma 30 this week which was just an epic bash session between Alma and Korihor. Here's a highlight from it:

"But Alma said unto him: Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator." Alma 30:44

This verse is just straight facts, God doesn't reveal Himself much, but just enough to catch a glimpse of Him and build our faith. We then have to choose to believe, otherwise we'll ignore the signs that are right in front of us. I'd recommend reading this whole chapter because it's wild. It's shockingly similar to some interactions I've had with people on the street on my mission.

L'altra mattina alle 6:30 il nostro rilevatore di monossido di carbonio non si spegneva, così l'abbiamo aperto, abbiamo tagliato i fili e l'abbiamo spaccato con un martello. Non si fermava ancora, ma poi abbiamo trovato l'interruttore per spegnerlo e abbiamo risolto il problema. (Prima che qualcuno si spaventi, si trattava di quello vecchio che era scaduto da due anni, ne abbiamo uno nuovo che funziona, così non muoriamo).

Abbiamo affisso un sacco di volantini per i nostri corsi di lingua, il che è stato abbastanza tranquillo, a parte tutti i maleintenzionati che hanno iniziato a farci scherzi telefonici. Siamo andati a un battesimo a Lugano, che è stato piuttosto emozionante. Siamo anche andati alla ricerca di lavagne bianche e abbiamo camminato per Como con una grande e vecchia lavagna bianca. Ho conosciuto un ragazzo del New Hampshire ed è stato bello. A parte questo, è stata una settimana abbastanza normale, con qualche bussata alle porte e qualche lezione interessante.

Questa settimana ho letto Alma 30, che è stata un'epica discussione tra Alma e Korihor. Ecco un momento saliente:

"Ma Alma gli disse: Hai avuto abbastanza segni; vuoi tentare il tuo Dio? Dirai forse: "Mostrami un segno", quando hai la testimonianza di tutti questi tuoi fratelli e anche di tutti i santi profeti? Le Scritture sono esposte davanti a te, sì, e tutte le cose denotano che c'è un Dio; sì, anche la terra e tutte le cose che sono sulla sua faccia, sì, e il suo movimento, sì, e anche tutti i pianeti che si muovono nella loro forma regolare testimoniano che c'è un Creatore supremo". Alma 30:44

Questo versetto è solo la pura realtà, Dio non si rivela molto, ma quanto basta per intravederlo e costruire la nostra fede. Dobbiamo poi scegliere di credere, altrimenti ignoreremo i segni che sono proprio davanti a noi. Raccomanderei di leggere questo capitolo per intero, perché è pazzesco. È incredibilmente simile ad alcune interazioni che ho avuto con le persone per strada durante la mia missione.
