Week 77: Saving Some Raga's Life

On Saturday we were in Lampugnano in Milano and while we were waiting in the subway station we heard someone on the loudspeaker asking people to step away from the yellow line. That never happens and after this guy repeating himself like five times we looked up and saw two guys my age standing way past the yellow line on the edge of the platform by the tracks. They were completely oblivious to the fact that the subway was pulling in and there was a solid chance they'd get hit by it. Everyone on the platform was watching them seeing if they'd move but no one moved a muscle. After about 15 seconds maybe we saw the subway lights coming out of the tunnel and since these raga were just on another planet I just instinctively walled over, grabbed their arms, and pulled them back onto the safe side of the platform. "Fear not to do good." Shoutout to the bystander effect.

On Thursday we did a blitz in Lugano but it was hard to find as usual. On Saturday we filmed something with Sorella Klingler in Lampugnano which was a lot of fun. Unfortunately it kinda ate up our whole day. On Monday we got transfer calls but it was pretty anticlimactic because our whole district is staying the same apart from the new missionaries coming from the MTC. Pretty exciting though that the 7 of us are all staying.

Today for p day we felt like going to Piemonte for literally no reason. The only city we could get to within a reasonable timeframe was this dinky little city named Novara, so we just decided to full send it and go. It actually was a super cool place to look around in, complete with a nice big centro, snail statues, a massive tower on top of the duomo, and a bunch of art. Good day all around.

With the new year we start our new study program of Come Follow Me which is the Book of Mormon this year. Reading the title page on Monday morning, I was particularly struck by what Moroni says the purpose of the book is: "Which is to show unto the remnant of the house of Israel what great things the Lord hath done for their fathers; and that they may know the covenants of the Lord, that they are not cast off forever—And also to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations". The purpose of the book is to show us God's hand so we can know how He works, teach us how to return to live with Him, and show us the way to find joy through Christ. Our job as missionaries isn't necessarily to increase church membership numbers or to convince other people that their philosophies are wrong and ours are right, but rather to bring people joy, peace, and hope through a knowledge of God and Jesus Christ.

TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

Sabato eravamo a Lampugnano a Milano e mentre aspettavamo nella stazione della metropolitana abbiamo sentito qualcuno all'altoparlante che chiedeva alle persone di allontanarsi dalla linea gialla. Questo non succede mai e dopo che questo tizio ha ripetuto l'annuncio per circa cinque volte, abbiamo alzato lo sguardo e abbiamo visto due ragazzi della mia età che stavano in piedi oltre la linea gialla, sul bordo della piattaforma vicino ai binari. Erano completamente ignari del fatto che la metropolitana si stava avvicinando e che c'era una forte possibilità che venissero investiti. Tutti sulla piattaforma li guardavano per vedere se si spostavano, ma nessuno muoveva un dito. Dopo forse circa 15 secondi abbiamo visto le luci della metropolitana uscire dal tunnel e, dato che questi ragazzi erano su un altro pianeta, mi sono istintivamente avvicinato, ho afferrato le loro braccia e li ho riportati sul lato sicuro della piattaforma. "Non temere di fare del bene". Urrà all'effetto spettatore.

Giovedì abbiamo fatto un blitz a Lugano, ma come al solito è stato difficile da trovare qualcuno. Sabato abbiamo filmato qualcosa con Sorella Klingler a Lampugnano ed è stato molto divertente. Purtroppo ci ha assorbito l'intera giornata. Lunedì abbiamo ricevuto le chiamate di trasferimento, ma è stato piuttosto statico perché il nostro distretto è rimasto lo stesso, a parte i nuovi missionari provenienti dall'MTC. È piuttosto emozionante, però, che tutti e 7 restiamo.

Oggi durante il pday abbiamo avuto voglia di andare in Piemonte senza nessun particolare motivo. L'unica città che potevamo raggiungere in un lasso di tempo ragionevole era questa piccola città di nome Novara, così abbiamo deciso di andare. In realtà era un posto molto bello da visitare, con un bel centro, statue di lumache, un'enorme torre in cima al duomo e un mucchio di opere d'arte. Una bella giornata per tutti.

Con il nuovo anno iniziamo il nostro nuovo programma di studio di Vieni e Seguitami, che quest'anno è il Libro di Mormon. Leggendo il frontespizio lunedì mattina, sono stato particolarmente colpito da ciò che Moroni dice essere lo scopo del libro: "Che è per mostrare al rimanente del casato d’Israele quali grandi cose il Signore ha fatto per i loro padri, e perché possano conoscere le alleanze del Signore, e che non sono rigettati per sempre — Ed anche per convincere i Giudei e i Gentili che Gesù è il Cristo, l’Eterno Iddio, che si manifesta a tutte le nazioni". Lo scopo del libro è quello di mostrarci la mano di Dio per farci capire come opera, insegnarci come tornare a vivere con Lui e mostrarci la via per trovare la gioia attraverso Cristo. Il nostro compito di missionari non è necessariamente quello di aumentare il numero di membri della chiesa o di convincere altre persone che le loro filosofie sono sbagliate e le nostre sono giuste, ma piuttosto di portare alle persone gioia, pace e speranza attraverso la conoscenza di Dio e di Gesù Cristo.
