Week 7: Fear of Heights 📈📈📈

Welcome back to another weekly installment of my blog! This week has been very long and unsuccessful. We try to talk to people on the street but they usually ignore us. HOWEVER, the mission as a whole has been doing super well! We set a record for new people taught this week (~170) and we're supposedly beating the numbers of other European missions, most of which have more missionaries than we do. Heck yeah.

Some stories from this week:

-We got our bikes stolen so now we just walk everywhere. The Leos (Leonardo shoes) have been taking their toll on our feet, but beauty is pain I guess.

-We went to Bologna for zone conference where I got to see a bunch of my MTC friends as well as meet older missionaries.

-We and the Sorelle have been working night and day on various musical numbers. We've basically got a band going here in Firenze.

-We saw more of the city. Today we went up to the top of the Firenze cathedral (for free because we are proud religious men @Nacho Libre) and my fear of heights suddenly kicked in, so that was fun but I am in fact still alive.

-Anziano Willis apparently has a recorder and that's been his preferred musical instrument of the week now that the music box has become less exciting.

We're doing scambi (exchanges, basically when you swap companions for a day) tomorrow so I'm heading up to Prato with Anziano Morton. We're also planning on hitting up Siena next Wednesday, so hopefully I'll get some sweet pictures in both areas.

Spiritual thought! In Alma 26:27, the sons of Mosiah are reflecting on their difficulties in missionary work: "Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success." I've thought about this scripture a lot this week because our missionary work has been pretty meh, especially compared to the rest of our mission. School's also starting up again at BYU and thinking back to that has also been tough. However, I know that as we turn to Christ, he can bless us with patience. Success does not always come when or how we want it, but as an Elder at the MTC said, you don't jump off a train passing through a dark tunnel just because you can't see the light just yet. Trust that the conductor knows what he's doing, and eventually you will be brought to the light. As we've continued to do our thing out here in the mission field, we've started to see light at the end of the tunnel. Though far, it's getting closer, and though it might not be in the form of baptism but rather in one of the many personal ways listed in Preach My Gospel chapter 1, that success does exist. So buckle up, because we're about to change Italy forever.

It was Anziano Finlayson's 21st birthday yesterday so he did some tiramisu taste testing/Ieri è stato il 21° compleanno di Anziano Finlayson, che ha così avuto modo di assaggiare due tipi di tiramisù.

Bentornati a un'altra puntata settimanale del mio blog! Questa settimana è stata molto lunga e infruttuosa. Abbiamo provato a parlare con le persone per strada, ma di solito ci ignorano. TUTTAVIA, la Missione nel suo complesso è andata benissimo! Questa settimana abbiamo stabilito un record d'insegnamento a nuove persone (~170) e stiamo presumibilmente battendo i numeri delle altre missioni europee, la maggior parte delle quali ha più missionari di noi. Ebbene sì.

Alcune storie di questa settimana:

-Ci hanno rubato le biciclette, quindi ora andiamo a piedi dappertutto. Le scarpe Leonardo che abbiamo comprato a Firenze ci hanno fatto male ai piedi, ma la bellezza è dolore, presumo.

-Siamo andati a Bologna per la conferenza di zona, dove ho potuto vedere un gruppo di amici dell'MTC e incontrare missionari più anziani.

-Noi e le Sorelle abbiamo lavorato giorno e notte su vari numeri musicali. Abbiamo praticamente una complesso musicale qui a Firenze.

-Abbiamo visto altre parti della città. Oggi siamo saliti in cima al Duomo di Firenze (gratis perché siamo dei fieri uomini religiosi @Nacho Libre) e la mia paura dell'altezza si è improvvisamente manifestata, quindi è stato divertente, ma in realtà sono ancora vivo.

-A quanto pare Anziano Willis ha un flauto dolce ed è stato il suo strumento musicale preferito della settimana, ora che il carillon è diventato per lui meno interessante.

Domani faremo degli scambi (in pratica ci si scambia i colleghi per un giorno), quindi andrò a Prato con Anziano Morton. Mercoledì prossimo abbiamo in programma di fare un salto anche a Siena, quindi spero di riuscire a scattare qualche bella foto in entrambe le città.

Pensiero spirituale! In Alma 26:27, i figli di Mosia riflettono sulle loro difficoltà nel lavoro missionario: "Ora, quando il nostro cuore era depresso e stavamo per tornare indietro, ecco, il Signore ci confortò, e disse: Andate fra i vostri fratelli, i Lamaniti, e sopportate con pazienza le vostre cafflizioni, e io vi darò il successo." Ho pensato molto a questa Scrittura questa settimana, perché il nostro lavoro missionario è stato piuttosto scarso, soprattutto rispetto al resto della nostra missione. Sta anche ricominciando la scuola alla BYU e ripensare a questo è stato difficile. Tuttavia, so che se ci rivolgiamo a Cristo, Egli può benedirci con la pazienza. Il successo non arriva sempre quando o come vogliamo, ma come ha detto un anziano all'MTC, non si salta giù da un treno che attraversa un tunnel buio solo perché non si vede ancora la luce. Abbiate fiducia nel fatto che il conduttore sa cosa sta facendo e alla fine sarete portati alla luce. Continuando a fare ciò che dobbiamo fare qui sul campo di missione, abbiamo iniziato a vedere la luce alla fine del tunnel. Anche se è lontana, si sta avvicinando, e anche se potrebbe non essere sotto forma di battesimo, ma piuttosto in uno dei tanti modi personali elencati in Predicare il mio Vangelo capitolo 1, quel successo esiste. Quindi allacciate le cinture, perché stiamo per cambiare l'Italia per sempre.
