Week 43: Brescia World Record Speedrun

Today we went to Sirmione but the Bergamo Sorelle had a 25 minute train layover to drop off their bags in Brescia on the way. Anziani Northrup and Wallace ran the bags to the apartment from the station and back again in 16 minutes, a round trip that usually takes 40 minutes.

Honestly the work has been so strange lately. We've been finding absolutely nobody out on the streets. Literally no one wants to talk to us. We've also had so many people stand us up as usual so it doesn't help that we've lost a lot of time waiting for appointments that don't end up happening. We have however had some success with Facebook and online missionary work which was a nice change of pace because usually I can never get that to work.

A cool experience this week was when Anziano Northrup and I both separately felt prompted to go to a random cemetery we'd never been to. After realizing that we were both thinking the same thing, we had a feeling there was a reason why we needed to be there. We ended up teaching a guy whose wife had died outside of the cemetery about the Resurrection and gave him a Book of Mormon to study. We weren't able to get his phone number but he said he'd study it and we were just happy to teach a little bit about eternal families to someone who needed to hear the message.

I just finished reading Jacob in the Book of Mormon and let me tell you, it's quite the underrated book. There's so many amazing verses in there, so I'll share one I liked:

"And he had hope to shake me from the faith, notwithstanding the many revelations and the many things which I had seen concerning these things; for I truly had seen angels, and they had ministered unto me. And also, I had heard the voice of the Lord speaking unto me in very word, from time to time; wherefore, I could not be shaken." Jacob 7:5

Someone once asked me if asking God if the church was true stemmed from doubt. I personally don't think so; the reason we are promised a witness through faith (Moroni 10:3-5) is because once we receive that testimony, we can fall back on that when we take some fire from others or even just have secondary questions about little details of the doctrine. A wise friend once told me "if the Book of Mormon is true, then nothing else matters" meaning that we can be confident in the reality of the restored church of Jesus Christ even when questions come up. When we have those spiritual experiences which confirm truth, we can, as Jacob here, rely on those to keep us firm in all circumstances.

Oggi siamo andati a Sirmione, ma le Sorelle di Bergamo avevano uno scalo ferroviario di 25 minuti per lasciare i loro bagagli a Brescia durante il tragitto. Anziani Northrup e Wallace hanno portato le valigie all'appartamento dalla stazione e sono tornati indietro in 16 minuti, un viaggio di andata e ritorno che di solito richiede 40 minuti.

Onestamente il lavoro è stato così strano ultimamente. Non abbiamo trovato assolutamente nessuno per le strade. Nessuno vuole parlare con noi. Inoltre, come al solito, molte persone ci hanno dato buca e non ci ha aiutato perdere molto tempo in attesa di appuntamenti che poi non si sono concretizzati. Abbiamo comunque avuto qualche successo con Facebook e il lavoro missionario online, il che è stato un bel cambiamento, perché di solito non riesco mai in quello.

Un'esperienza interessante di questa settimana è stata quella in cui io e Anziano Northrup, separatamente, ci siamo sentiti spinti ad andare in un certo cimitero in cui non eravamo mai stati. Dopo aver capito che entrambi stavamo pensando la stessa cosa, abbiamo avuto la sensazione che ci fosse una ragione per cui dovevamo essere lì. Alla fine abbiamo parlato della risurrezione fuori dal cimitero a un uomo la cui moglie era morta e gli abbiamo dato un Libro di Mormon da studiare. Non siamo riusciti a ottenere il suo numero di telefono, ma ha detto che lo avrebbe studiato e noi eravamo felici di aver insegnato un po' di cose sulle famiglie eterne a qualcuno che aveva bisogno di sentire il messaggio.

Ho appena finito di leggere Giacobbe nel Libro di Mormon e lasciatemi dire che è un libro piuttosto sottovalutato. Ci sono così tanti versetti straordinari, quindi ne condividerò uno che mi è piaciuto:

"E aveva speranza di scuotermi dalla mia fede, nonostante le molte rivelazioni e le molte cose che avevo visto riguardo a queste cose; poiché avevo veramente visto degli angeli, ed essi mi avevano istruito. E di quando in quando avevo anche udito la voce del Signore parlarmi con parole reali; pertanto non potevo essere scosso.". Giacobbe 7:5

Una volta qualcuno mi ha chiesto se chiedere a Dio se la Chiesa fosse vera derivasse dal dubbio. Personalmente non credo; la ragione per cui ci è stata promessa una testimonianza mediante la fede (Moroni 10:3-5) è che, una volta ricevuta la testimonianza, potremo farvi ricorso quando saremo messi sotto accusa da altri o anche solo quando avremo domande secondarie su piccoli dettagli della dottrina. Un saggio amico una volta mi ha detto: "Se il Libro di Mormon è vero, allora nient'altro conta", il che significa che possiamo essere fiduciosi nella realtà della Chiesa restaurata di Gesù Cristo anche quando sorgono delle domande. Quando abbiamo quelle esperienze spirituali che confermano la verità, possiamo, come Giacobbe, fare affidamento su di esse per mantenerci saldi in ogni circostanza.
