Week 42: Trenord Tie

In Bergamo we ride trains which are owned by Trenord. The conductors wear ties so we always try to see if they'll give us theirs so we can wear them around as missionaries. On Monday Anziano Northrup actually was able to snag one from the conductor which was pretty sick.

We saw a ton of little miracles this week. Here's a little rundown:

-Literally seconds after mentioning his name in conversation, we ran into a friend from our English class who we hadn't seen in weeks. Quando si parla del diavolo spuntano le corna (speak of the devil).

-We had a lesson with a friend and right at the end his friend walked in and basically taught everything he learned to him. It was super crazy to see how much he internalized it and was so excited to share what he just learned. They're both old Italian men and it's also always so entertaining to see them bickering too.

-We finally found a watermelon at the grocery store. It was 9 euro which I didn't realize but it was worth it because we'd been looking for weeks.

-We went to a stake activity in Verona (basically a huge activity for a lot of church members in our region) and we got to spend some good quality time with the members in Bergamo.

-On the way home from Verona we had so many problems with trains. First the ticket machine didn't work, then our second train was late and made us miss our connection. We decided to street contact while we waited for the next train and we got chased out of an apartment complex by a really rude family. After that though we were able to find and teach two really cool guys at the train station, both of which had already heard of our church in the past. After that we also saw an old friend at the train station who we hadn't been able to get in contact with. It was just super cool to see how God put so many people in our path as we were traveling, even with and because of missing our first train. Everything happens for a reason.

Spiritual thought! There's a scripture in Moroni 7 that says that if we don't have charity (the pure love of Christ toward others) then we are nothing. I've thought about that a lot and why it says that. I've come to realize that this is because our goal is to become like God. He wants us to become like Him because He loves us. In order for us to become like Him, we need to have that same unconditional love for others that He has for them as well. The first principle we teach as missionaries is that God loves us. His love is that important. Without us having that same love for others, we can never measure up to what God wants us to be. Without becoming what God wants us to be, we're not much at all, and that's why we're nothing without charity. Without His fundamental characteristic we can never become much of anything compared to Him. So go exercise more charity towards others. I have a strong testimony that it'll change your life.

TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

A Bergamo viaggiamo su treni di proprietà di Trenord. I controllori indossano cravatte e noi cerchiamo sempre di vedere se ci danno le loro per poterle portare in giro come missionari. Lunedì Anziano Northrup è riuscito a farsene dare una dal capotreno, il che è stato fenomenale.

Questa settimana abbiamo visto un sacco di piccoli miracoli. Ecco un piccolo resoconto:

-Pochi secondi dopo aver citato il suo nome in una conversazione, abbiamo incontrato un amico del corso di inglese che non vedevamo da settimane. Quando si parla del diavolo spuntano le corna.

-Abbiamo fatto una lezione a un nostro amico e proprio alla fine un suo amico è entrato e gli ha praticamente insegnato tutto quello che aveva imparato da noi. È stato pazzesco vedere quanto abbia interiorizzato della lezione e quanto fosse entusiasta di condividere ciò che aveva appena imparato. Sono entrambi anziani italiani ed è sempre divertente vederli avere dei battibecchi.

-Abbiamo finalmente trovato un'anguria al supermercato. Costava 9 euro, cosa che di cui non mi ero reso conto, ma ne è valsa la pena perché la stavamo cercando da settimane.

-Siamo andati a un'attività di palo a Verona (in pratica una grande attività per molti membri della Chiesa nella nostra regione) e abbiamo trascorso del tempo proficuo con i membri di Bergamo.

-Sulla via del ritorno da Verona abbiamo avuto molti problemi con i treni. Prima la biglietteria automatica non funzionava, poi il secondo treno era in ritardo e ci ha fatto perdere la coincidenza. Abbiamo deciso di contattare per strada mentre aspettavamo il treno successivo e siamo stati scacciati da un complesso di appartamenti da una famiglia molto maleducata. In seguito, però, siamo riusciti a trovare e insegnare a due ragazzi davvero in gamba alla stazione ferroviaria, entrambi avevano già sentito parlare della nostra chiesa in passato. Poi abbiamo anche rivisto un vecchio amico alla stazione ferroviaria con cui non eravamo riusciti a metterci in contatto. È stato davvero fantastico vedere come Dio abbia messo sulla nostra strada così tante persone mentre eravamo in viaggio, anche se e a causa della perdita del primo treno. Tutto accade per una ragione.

Pensiero spirituale! C'è una scrittura in Moroni 7 che dice che se non abbiamo la carità (il puro amore di Cristo verso gli altri) allora non siamo nulla. Ho pensato molto a questo e al perché di questa affermazione. Sono giunto a capire che questo è perché il nostro obiettivo è diventare come Dio. Egli vuole che diventiamo come Lui perché ci ama. Per diventare come Lui, dobbiamo avere per gli altri lo stesso amore incondizionato che Lui ha per loro. Il primo principio che insegniamo come missionari è che Dio ci ama. Il suo amore è così importante. Senza lo stesso amore per gli altri, non potremo mai essere all'altezza di ciò che Dio vuole che siamo. Senza diventare ciò che Dio vuole che siamo, non siamo niente, ed è per questo che non siamo niente senza la carità. Senza la Sua caratteristica fondamentale non potremo mai diventare granché rispetto a Lui. Quindi, sforzatevi di esercitare più carità verso gli altri. Ho una forte testimonianza che cambierà la vostra vita.
