Week 13: Fu Fighters

No I am not referring to the band Foo Fighters, as great as they are. Anziano Willis and I started constantly speaking in the past remote form of Italian. It's just a hard verb tense and it's never used in Northern Italy. The word "fu" means "was" but like a really long time ago. The two of us now use past remote form for things that happened 5 minutes ago and the Sorelle hate it but we do it anyway.

Other things from this week:

-We did a lot of street contacting. We had such little success that we've started knocking on doors like the old days. It's weird in Italy because we first have to ring the intercom outside and beg people to let us into the building.

-We talked to this guy in the park who had maybe four teeth and he was rolling weed into a joint while we talked to him. He said some pretty blasphemous things so we got out of there pretty quick.

-We taught our first English class on Saturday. It was painfully awkward but we got it done. Hopefully we can become better teachers in the future.

-Anziano Willis' grandparents came to visit and they bought us a Fiorentine steak and it was amazing.

Some backstory on this week's spiritual thought: When we were knocking doors yesterday, we found ourselves waiting for this one person to open. We started to leave, but I got the impression to ring their doorbell in case they didn't hear the knock. I figured it wasn't worth it so I started walking down the stairs to the next floor, but right at that moment the lights turned off. I had to go back up their stairs to turn them on, and the switch was right next to the doorbell. I figured that was probably God telling me to go back and ring it, so I did and a lady actually opened the door! She was super nice and actually agreed to come to church on Sunday! Never delay a prompting because you won't always be prompted twice like I was.

I was reading Moroni 7 this week (great chapter 10/10 recommend). Verse 27 poses a question: "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, have miracles ceased because Christ hath ascended into heaven, and hath sat down on the right hand of God, to claim of the Father his rights of mercy which he hath upon the children of men?" This question is then answered a few verses later in 37: "Behold I say unto you, Nay; for it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men; wherefore, if these things have ceased wo be unto the children of men, for it is because of unbelief, and all is vain." Ringing that doorbell was an act of faith. It would've been easy to just keep walking down the stairs to the next door, I literally was about to. However, because I realized that I needed to go back and take that step of faith, I was able to experience such a miracle. So go forward with faith! You'll never really know what to expect, but once you start looking for God's hand in your life, you'll start to see it more and more. Seek and expect miracles!

TRADUZIONE IN ITALIANO

Non mi riferisco al gruppo dei Foo Fighters, per quanto siano grandiosi. Io e Anziano Willis abbiamo iniziato a parlare costantemente al passato remoto in italiano. È un tempo verbale difficile e non si usa mai nel Nord Italia. La parola "fu" significa "è stato", ma molto tempo fa. Noi due ora usiamo il passato remoto per cose che sono successe 5 minuti fa e le Sorelle non lo sopportano, ma noi lo facciamo comunque.

Altre cose di questa settimana:

-Abbiamo provato a fermare parecchia gente per strada. Abbiamo avuto così poco successo che abbiamo iniziato a bussare alle porte come ai vecchi tempi. È strano in Italia perché prima dobbiamo suonare il citofono all'esterno e supplicare le persone di farci entrare nell'edificio.

-Abbiamo parlato con un tizio nel parco che aveva forse quattro denti e stava arrotolando dell'erba in uno spinello mentre noi parlavamo con lui. Ha detto cose piuttosto blasfeme, così ce ne siamo andati in fretta.

-Sabato abbiamo tenuto la nostra prima lezione di inglese. È stato dolorosamente imbarazzante, ma ce l'abbiamo fatta. Speriamo di poter diventare insegnanti migliori in futuro.

-I nonni di Anziano Willis sono venuti a trovarci e ci hanno comprato una bistecca alla fiorentina che è stata fantastica.

Qualche retroscena sul pensiero spirituale di questa settimana: Ieri, mentre bussavamo alle porte, ci siamo ritrovati ad aspettare che questa persona ci aprisse. Abbiamo iniziato ad andarcene, ma ho avuto l'impressione di dover suonare di nuovo il campanello nel caso in cui non avessero sentito bussare. Ho pensato che non ne valesse la pena e ho iniziato a scendere le scale verso il piano successivo, ma proprio in quel momento si è spenta la luce. Ho dovuto risalire le scale per accenderla e l'interruttore era proprio accanto al campanello. Ho pensato che probabilmente era Dio che mi diceva di tornare indietro a suonare, così l'ho fatto e una signora mi ha aperto la porta! Era molto gentile e ha accettato di venire in chiesa domenica! Non rimandate mai un suggerimento perché non sempre sarete sollecitati due volte come è successo a me.

Questa settimana stavo leggendo Moroni 7 (grande capitolo, lo consiglio al 100 per 100). Il versetto 27 pone una domanda: "Pertanto, miei diletti fratelli, sono cessati i miracoli perché Cristo è asceso al cielo e si è seduto alla destra di Dio, per rivendicare presso il Padre i diritti di misericordia che ha sui figlioli degli uomini?". A questa domanda segue la risposta pochi versetti dopo, nel versetto 37: "Ecco, io vi rispondo: No. Poiché è per fede che si compiono i miracoli; ed è per fede che gli angeli appaiono e insegnano agli uomini; pertanto, se queste cose sono cessate, guai ai figlioli degli uomini, poiché ciò è a causa dell’incredulità, e tutto è vano.". Suonare quel campanello è stato un atto di fede. Sarebbe stato facile continuare a scendere le scale fino alla porta successiva, stavo letteralmente per farlo. Tuttavia, poiché ho capito che dovevo tornare indietro e compiere quell'atto di fede, ho potuto assistere a un tale miracolo. Quindi andate avanti con fede! Non saprete mai cosa aspettarvi, ma quando inizierete a cercare la mano di Dio nella vostra vita, inizierete a vederla sempre di più. Cercate e aspettatevi dei miracoli!
