Week 1: The Dormant Duo

It's only been three days since I started the MTC (Missionary Training Center) but my P day (preparation day, basically my day off) is on Thursday while I'm here so I figured I might as well get in the habit of writing now.

Home MTC has been exhausting. My companion (the Elder I work with), Elder Banks, and I both managed to oversleep and miss part of class. Great to see that we've already established our reputation before even getting to the MTC in person. Speaking of Elder Banks, he's a pretty cool guy. He's also a drummer and is a pretty sociable guy which makes Zoom classes way less awkward.

The classes on Zoom are surprisingly fun (most of the time) despite them giving me some PTSD to my last two years of high school. My district (my class, or the group of missionaries I'm usually with) has 14 Elders and no Sisters, which is a bit unusual but totally fun. They are all serving stateside English-speaking, so it's easy to feel out of place being the Elder serving in Italy, but they're a great group regardless.

Once a day we have these massive Zoom workshops with the new missionaries who started this week. There's 500 of us, so the chat gets a little wild. I also saw some homies from the BYU 122nd YSA ward, which was hype. More 122nd parties will follow once we all get to Provo in a few weeks.

One spiritual thought I'd like to share comes from the song "Homeward Bound" performed by the Tabernacle Choir. Go listen right now, it's amazing!

For months I've been terrified of the lifestyle change that comes with being a missionary, but as I listened to this song over the past week, the chorus reminded me that as long as I put my trust in God, He will deliver me "somehow." It's okay not to know what God's plans are; we know that He knows what's best for us and because we know that, we can move forward in faith.

Settimana 1 : Il DUO ADDORMENTATO

Ho iniziato l'MTC (Centro di Addestramento per Missionari, o Missionary Training Center in inglese) da soli tre giorni ma il mio P day (Giorno di Preparazione, in pratica il mio giorno di riposo) è il giovedì finché sono qui così ho pensato di cominciare a scrivere già da ora.

L'MTC a casa è stressante. Io e il mio collega (l'Anziano con cui lavoro), Anziano Banks, siamo riusciti entrambi a dormire oltre il previsto e a saltare parte della classe. Grandioso rendersi conto che siamo riusciti a crearci una reputazione ancora prima di arrivare all' MTC di persona. A proposito di Anziano Banks, è davvero un tipo in gamba. È un batterista e anche un tipo molto socievole il che rende le classi su Zoom più gradevoli.

Le classi su Zoom sono sorprendentemente divertenti (la maggior parte delle volte) nonostante mi diano un po' di Disturbo da Stress Post-Traumatico a causa degli ultimi due anni di scuola superiore. Il mio Distretto (la mia classe, ovvero il gruppo di missionari con cui sono abitualmente) ha 14 anziani e nessuna Sorella, il che è insolito ma molto divertente. Serviranno tutti negli Stati Uniti in lingua inglese, allora è facile sentirsi fuori posto dato che sono l'unico Anziano che servirà in Italia, ma sono un gran bel gruppo in ogni caso.

Una volta al giorno abbiamo queste enormi riunioni su Zoom con i nuovi missionari che hanno cominciato questa settimana. Siamo in 500, così la chat diventa un po' scatenata. Ho anche rivisto alcuni amici dal mio rione dell'università, il 122esimo rione dei giovani adulti non sposati di BYU, il che è stato estremamente emozionante. Sarà troppo bello passare del tempo insieme quando ci ritroveremo tutti a Provo tra qualche settimana.

Un pensiero spirituale che vorrei condividere viene dalla canzone "Homeward Bound" cantata dal Coro del Tabernacolo. Ascoltatela, è meravigliosa!

Per mesi sono stato terrorizzato dall'idea del cambiamento di stile di vita che comporta il divenire missionario, ma mentre ascoltavo questa canzone questa settimana, il coro mi ha ricordato che fino a quando confiderò in Dio, Egli mi soccorrerà "in qualche modo". Non importa se non conosciamo i piani del Signore; sappiamo che Lui sa ciò che è meglio per noi e, grazie a questa conoscenza, possiamo procedere con fede.
